IMA KPPS: Professional Protection Every Doctor Should Understand

Medical practice today involves not only clinical responsibility but also increasing legal, financial, and professional risk. Even when treatment is appropriate, a doctor may still have to respond to allegations, consumer complaints, or compensation claims.

The IMA Karnataka Professional Protection Scheme (IMA KPPS) is a mutual support initiative of the IMA Karnataka State Branch designed to safeguard medical practitioners against legal expenses and compensation claims arising from professional negligence disputes. It supports members in handling litigation before District, State, and National Consumer Forums and provides protection up to ₹1 crore.

Key benefits

• Support through panel advocates and assistance with legal expenses
• Option to engage one’s own lawyer, subject to KPPS rules
• Protection against professional-negligence and CPA-related claims
• Helps protect professional confidence, practice continuity, and personal assets
• Individual-doctor benefit scheme; hospitals are not covered

Who is eligible?

The applicant should:

• Be a Life Member of IMA
• Be registered with the Karnataka Medical Council
• Ensure that PG degree or diploma registration is included
• Maintain continuous active membership to retain scheme benefits

What should a member do after receiving a legal notice?

The member should immediately contact the KPPS office and submit:

• A copy of the legal notice or complaint
• OP/IP case papers
• Investigation reports
• Treatment records

The KPPS office reviews the matter, provides a panel of advocates, and supports the member in proceeding with the defence.

Fee details

At admission:

• Admission fee: ₹100
• Annual subscription: ₹2,000
• Advance fraternity contribution: ₹1,000
• GST and round-off: ₹600
• Total: ₹3,700

For subsequent years, the annual subscription is ₹500, while the fraternity contribution is decided and communicated for that year.
